FAQ

What is the PSG Academy, and what can my child expect?

PSG Academy is designed for players ages 8 to 16 who love trading card games (TCGs) and want to compete. We provide a structured, supportive environment to help players develop strategy, confidence, and teamwork. Players work on improving their gameplay and preparing for both local and larger tournaments.

Which trading card games does the Academy focus on?

Currently, the Academy focuses on Disney Lorcana and Pokémon, but we’re always open to expanding based on player interest and feedback.

What age groups or experience levels is the program designed for?

The Academy is for kids aged 8 to 16, focusing on players in Pokémon’s youth divisions and Lorcana’s future youth program. We welcome players of all experience levels—whether they're new to tournaments or actively competing. While we don’t offer learn-to-play sessions, players should have a basic understanding of the game and a passion for playing.

Is the Academy more about learning or competing? How are the sessions structured?

We take a holistic approach, balancing both learning and competition. Sessions focus on core skills such as gameplay principles, deck-building, and strategy. Players also improve their play patterns and prepare for tournaments by discussing the current meta-game and event dynamics. Beyond the game, we teach sportsmanship, healthy habits (like sleep and nutrition), and how to be a positive team member who can adapt and thrive.

Who leads the Academy sessions, and what are their qualifications?

The Academy sessions are currently led by PSG founder Noah Barnett. With over 25 years of experience playing trading card games, Noah brings a holistic approach to player development, emphasizing strategy, critical thinking, and personal growth beyond the game.

Where and when do Academy sessions take place? How long do they last?

Our first location is at Santan Village in Gilbert, Arizona, and we plan to expand to additional locations across the Phoenix Valley based on interest. Sessions are held once a week and last 90 minutes.

How much does it cost, and what’s included in the membership or program fees?

Sessions cost $25 each, or you can subscribe for $100 per month. The monthly subscription includes active coaching support between sessions, deck list reviews and advice ahead of tournaments, on-demand support, and access to member-only team gear.

Can my child attend a trial session before committing to a full program?

Yes! We offer a complimentary trial session so that your child can experience the Academy and see if it’s a good fit for them.

What equipment or materials does my child need to bring?

We recommend that players bring their current deck, a play mat, and accessories such as dice and a notepad.

How do I sign up or get more information about the program?

Signing up is simple! Fill out the form and indicate which Phoenix Valley location you’re interested in attending. Our team will follow up with an email providing additional details and the next scheduled session for your selected area.
